Abstract

This study examined the relationship between personality traits and the sport of rugby league at the elite level. Literature reviewed during the course of this study indicated that there is a strong association between personality characteristics and success in sport. This in turn supported the concept of utilizing personality traits as a predictor of elite rugby league performance. The personality traits of a group of 67 past and present elite Australian rugby league players were assessed utilizing two personality tests, the CPI 260 and the PVSIII-R test of mental hardiness. The findings from this study demonstrated that there is a relationship between certain personality traits and elite rugby league performance. The elite players scored significantly higher in five of the 29 scales (traits) of the CPI 260. The results of this study support the Necessity Traits theory developed from this study as a robust model for predicting elite RL performance.
